Originally born in Asheville, my career has taken me from Iredell county, to New York City, to Williamsburg, Virginia, and now back to Asheville. A strong supporter of the liberal arts, my Bachelor of Arts from Wake Forest University is in Sociology, with a minor in Women’s and Gender Studies. I have a Master of Education in Community Counseling from The College of William & Mary, and a Doctorate in Education from Western Carolina University, where I studied the impact of internships on students’ career outcomes.

My drive is to connect students with opportunity, because the best way to learn about yourself and who you want to be is to gain experience. As the director of the career center, I am dedicated to ensuring the Career Center is not only a resource for individual students and alumni but also serves as a place to build connections.

Though I’m originally from Allentown, PA I’ve lived most of my life in Indianapolis, IN. I didn’t realize how much I missed the mountains until moving to Asheville, and I absolutely love living here. I earned my bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) and later earned my Master’s degree in Education from Indiana University with concentrations in adult education and instructional systems technology. I started my career in human resources but transitioned to career services and discovered that it was the field that I wanted to stay in.

I love helping students discover their passions and helping them learn how to make their dreams a reality. I am so excited to continue supporting students with their career exploration and development at UNC Asheville, as well as partnering with faculty to support their efforts to bring career education into the classroom. Outside of work, I love reading, hiking, and spending time with my two Newfoundlands. I highly value constant growth and learning, so my next adventure is trying to learn how to homestead.

David Earnhardt

Associate Director of Employer Relations

Office: 119 Ramsey Library
Phone: 828.232.5099
Email: dearnhar@unca.edu

I am a North Carolina native, and prior to coming to UNC Asheville in 2016, I spent six years in the Boston area working with business students in Residence Life and Academic Advising. That work included teaching, leading co-curricular professional development programs, creating conferences, and supporting internship and career exploration opportunities.

I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Communications and a Master’s degree in College Student Personnel from Western Carolina University. I’ve found a great deal of satisfaction in roles that sit at the intersection of students, employers, and learning. In my current role as Associate Director for Employer Relations, I partner with local and regional employers to build recruiting strategies that connect UNC Asheville students and alumni with meaningful opportunities.

Outside of work, environmental sustainability is a core value of mine, I watch a lot of movies, and care more about the Carolina Panthers than I probably should. Feel free to stop by my office in Ramsey Library or send me an email, I’m looking forward to working with you.

Originally from New York State, I earned my Bachelor of Science in History with a minor in Women & Gender Studies from SUNY Brockport before completing my Master of Science in Higher Education at Syracuse University. Looking to get away from Syracuse winters, I applied sight unseen to UNC Asheville and have been here ever since.

I’ve been with the Career Center for 7+ years and have held multiple roles on the team. My current role is the Associate Director of Student Employment Development, where I oversee on-campus student employment. I hope to help make student employment even more of a high impact experience for students.

Outside of work, I can be found cuddling my cats while reading or listening to my husband explain Premiere League soccer.

Born and raised in Athens, Georgia, higher education has been a part of my life from the very beginning. I fell in love with the southern Appalachians when earning my Bachelor’s degree in History at Young Harris College. I then spent some time in Boston earning my Master’s in Higher Education from Boston College. I love Western North Carolina and love helping students turn their dreams to reality. Reasons to meet with me include reviewing application documents, internship searching, and getting connected to hiring employers in our area. Outside of work, I enjoy reading fantasy series, browsing farmer’s markets, and spending time with my two dogs.

Johannah Wetzel

Career Coach

While I was born in Asheville, most of my life has been spent living abroad—in Cochabamba, Bolivia as a child, and in Vancouver, Canada as an adult. I’m a true ‘third-culture-kid’ (TCK) as they call us. I love speaking Spanish, listening to salsa music, and Cuban Rueda dancing.  I have recently moved back to WNC to live near my parents and am enjoying getting reacquainted with the city of Asheville and being newly acquainted with the UNCA community.

My junior year of college I was an RA, an experience that transformed my college career and significantly impacted my understanding of what I had to offer the world.  After this I knew that I wanted to be involved in work that helped others become more confident in their own gifts.  This led me to work in Spain with young adults, and then to Vancouver to get my MA in Theology.  Eventually I settled back into higher education & student affairs where I oversaw a global service-learning program, worked with international students and supported the entire Student Life team.

My years in Canada further deepened my passion for leadership development which is why I am loving being a career coach and assisting the student employment team. I look forward to supporting you to take the next steps in your own career and leadership journey!

Michelle Dyer

Career Coach

I am originally from the Southwest but have called Asheville home since 2022. My career path has been winding and wonderful: after earning a Bachelor’s degree in English/Creative Writing from the University of New Mexico, I taught high school English for seven years, then pursued various writing- and education-adjacent work. As I developed my sense of self, I discovered my love of supporting the uniqueness of others, which led me to pursue a counseling career. I am now a graduate student in the Clinical Mental Health Counseling program at Western Carolina University.

As your career coach, I am here to support you in every stage of your career journey — from quick resume reviews to exploring the big questions about your future. I approach each student with curiosity and compassion, and if I don’t have an answer (which is likely!), I will find it.

In my personal life, I enjoy birding, playing board games, and going on walks with my pup Maizy. I absolutely love working at the Career Center. Go Bulldogs!

I was fortunate to grow up surrounded by the natural beauty of Lake Norman, NC, which sparked a lifelong love of nature and the outdoors. This led me to earn a Bachelor of Science in Fisheries and Wildlife Conservation Biology from North Carolina State University and pursue a decade-long conservation career in Southwest Florida. In 2023, North Carolina called me back, and I’m excited to be part of Asheville’s vibrant community, enjoying the mountain landscapes and changing seasons.

My career has taken many paths—from hospitality to nonprofit work to small business ownership—but I’ve found my true passion in helping others find direction and opportunities for growth in their careers. I look forward to supporting students as they define and achieve their goals.

Outside of work, you can find me hiking the Blue Ridge Parkway with my partner, playing Dungeons & Dragons, trying (and often failing) at fly fishing, or hanging out with my dog, Kevin. I’m thrilled to join the UNCA team—Go Bulldogs!

I serve as the Career Center Program Associate, where I am passionate about helping students build meaningful connections with employers and explore opportunities that align with their goals. I love planning and coordinating events that bring students and employers together in meaningful ways. I am very passionate about supporting students as they gain hands-on experience, grow in confidence, and prepare for life after graduation!

I earned both of my degrees from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville: a Bachelor of Arts in Communication Studies and a Master of Science in Educational Administration with a concentration in Higher Education. I fell in love with Asheville’s vibrant community and beautiful mountain scenery and relocated here in September 2024 with my partner and our three pets. Outside of work, I enjoy going on long walks with my dog, checking out cute little coffee shops, reading a good book, watching scary movies, and baking!

I am proud to be part of the Bulldog community and look forward to supporting students as they navigate their career journeys.
